The main accused in a sensational case of gang rape involving the wife of an IFS officer in Odisha (Odisha) has been apprehended in Maharashtra after 22 years. There are three accused in the case which came out on 9 January 1999, out of which two accused were arrested seven days after the incident, but the main accused Bibekanand Biswal alias Biban was absconding for more than two decades, now Maharashtra Has been arrested from Ambi Valley in Lonavla.
In 1999, three men gang-raped the wife of an IFS officer while she was traveling in a car with a journalist friend. The three accused had stopped the woman’s car near Baranga on the night of January and gang-raped her. The investigation of this case was entrusted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The two accused were arrested and convicted seven days after the incident.
One accused died last year
Pradeep Sahu alias Padiya was first arrested on January 15, 1999 in this case. Khurda district sessions judge convicted him and Tuna Mohanty in 2002 and sentenced the two accused to life imprisonment. The High Court also upheld this decision. Padiya died during treatment in the Capital Hospital here in February last year.
‘Operation Silent Viper’ to catch the main accused
Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S Sarangi said on Monday that ‘Operation Silent Viper’ was started three months ago to nab the main accused, after which he could be arrested. “After receiving information about his whereabouts, our team was active in Maharashtra and we were working closely with the Maharashtra Police,” he said.
He told that Biban was working as a lumberjacker with fake identity of Jalandhar Swain in Lonavla, Maharashtra. According to sources, the police will now hand over Biban to the CBI. At the same time, the woman has demanded the death penalty to the main accused. After this incident, there was a big political uproar in the state. After the public outrage across the state, the then Chief Minister JB Patnaik had to resign from his post.
