Thiruvananthapuram, 14 February (Language) The Election Commission said on Sunday that the Malappuram Lok Sabha seat, vacated after the resignation of IUML MP PK Kunhalkutty, would be held along with the Kerala Assembly elections. Assembly elections are due in the state in April-May. The Election Commission delegation told reporters here that the dates of the assembly elections will be announced after considering the suggestions of political parties. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora is the leader of this delegation and Election Commissioners Sushil Chandra and Rajiv Kumar are its other members. Arora said,

Arora said, “We will consider the suggestions of various political parties to fix dates keeping in mind the festivals of Vishu, Easter and Ramadan.” He said that the request of political parties to hold elections in one phase will also be considered. The delegation said, “By-elections in Malappuram constituency will be held along with the state assembly elections. “Indian Union Muslim League leader and MP PK Kunhalkutty resigned from Lok Sabha to spearhead his party’s campaign in the election. The Election Commission delegation held a meeting with Chief Electoral Officer Tikaram Meena, Chief Secretary Vishwas Mehta, next Chief Secretary VP Joy, State Police Chief Loknath Behera and all the District Magistrates, District Police Chiefs and other officials.
