BJP once again got majority in metropolitan municipality elections.
Most of the results in the local body elections in Gujarat have come but the counting of votes is not over yet. BJP has once again got a majority in all the 6 metropolitan municipalities of the state. There are a total of 192 seats in the Ahmedabad Mahanagar Municipality, out of which BJP seems to get 143 and Congress 15 seats. Similarly, BJP is getting 66 seats and Congress 10 seats out of 76 seats in Vadodara.
In 72 seats of Rajkot, BJP is seen getting 68 seats and Congress 4 seats, while out of 52 seats in Bhavnagar, 44 are seen in BJP’s account and 8 seats in Congress’s account. There are 64 seats in Jamnagar, BJP is seen 50 and Congress 11 seats. The shocking result is of Surat, BJP out of 120 seats here, 93 seats, while Aam Aadmi Party is seen getting 27 seats. The special thing is that for the first time the Aam Aadmi Party was in the fray in the local elections of Gujarat.
Actually, Surat is considered to be the stronghold of the Patidars and for the last 25-30 years the Patidars have been considered the biggest supporters of the BJP, but in this election the Patidars have played their decisive role in the victory of the Aam Aadmi Party. In Gujarat, the head of the AAP comes from the Patidar society of Gopal Italia Surat. It is believed that a large section of the traders of Surat are influenced by the functioning of the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi. The way Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal praised Delhi’s business model in his Surat meeting. This has instilled a trust in the minds of traders about Kejriwal.
One more thing is clear in this election that the Congress is continuously failing to make gains. Hardik Patel, the acting president of Gujarat Congress and leader of the Patidar movement, also described himself as neglected during the election campaign. The Congress last became the largest party in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation from 2000 to 2005. In democracy, the importance of the ruling party is as much as that of the opposition. From the politics of the Center and the states to the elections to the local bodies, the way the Congress is losing the role of the opposition as well.
